Are you passionate about developing and delivering a creative menu and quality of hospitality? Consider becoming our Catering Lead at the new venue in Hextable. Responsible to the Cafe manager and wider NDH Board of Directors we are looking to add this staff member and others asap to the team of over thirty volunteers alongside our Cafe Manager in the delivery of our vision for welcoming and excellent hospitality.

On behalf of the Directors of Next Door Hextable and the PCC of St Peters Hextable & St Pauls Swanley Village, we are excited to recruit a key catering team lead! You’ll get to shape the kitchen, the range and detail of what we offer, as the opening date and details of our new venue soon approaches.

The main responsibilities of this role are:

  • Development and delivery of a creative, simple and accessible menu 

  • Manage the back of house kitchen operation of the Cafe:

  • Food preparation prior to service

  • Food preparation and cooking during service.

  • Offering a friendly and efficient service to all customers.

  • Profitable sales to contribute to the income of the venue 

Working with: Café manager, volunteers & directors 

Location: Hextable, Kent. BR8 7RH

Hours of work: Twenty-plus hours a week: part-time or job-sharing working would be considered, day-time and lunchtime hours esp.

The Cafe will be open initially on a Wednesday-to-Saturday timetable, working initially 4 or more hours per day Wednesday to Saturday initially. The salary range is £9.50 to £10.25 per hour depending on experience, with bonuses.

Main tasks

  • Ensure that all preparation areas, the fridge and all cooking equipment and serving utensils etc are kept clean.

  • Ensure that all equipment used is clean, safe and fit for purpose before use.

  • Observe all food handling, allergen and safety requirements in preparation, cooking and storage.

  • Planning and ordering of ingredients. 

  • Ensure that no cross-contamination of food is permitted in the fridge.

  • Ensure that only authorised volunteers enter the kitchen, and ensure that the equipment and facilities are kept clean.

  • Lead with others in all required food preparation and cooking is carried out before service starts.

  • Prepare, cook and present all orders from front of house.

General

  • Develop menu and pricing changes with the Café Manager.

  • Actively promote the NDH as an ambassador in all dealings with the public.

  • Attend Team meetings with other NDH colleagues, when appropriate.

  • Inform the Café manager of any operating and maintenance issues.

  • Carry out other tasks requested by the Café manager for the effective running of the cafe.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essentials for us are…

  • Experience of cafe, restaurant, pub food or fast-food catering, preparation/cooking/service

  • Supportive of the Christian ethos and values of the venue.

  • Able to work within a team with Front of House Cafe team.

  • Self motivated; able to work on own initiative. 

  • Knowledge of menu planning.

  • Good understanding of budgetary, portion control and wastage

  • Food Safety/Health & Safety knowledge.

  • Food hygiene certificate.

  • Good verbal communication.

  • An understanding of allergies, dietary requirements.

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 2 Catering & Hospitality experience is desirable.

Our 54-cover café space is a central part of a £1.6million build and fit-out, with a high-quality bespoke specification including a La Marzocco Linea PB espresso machine and a multipurpose production kitchen, AV spec and on-site amenities and facilities.
